Ease Your Anxiety with Chinese Medicine

Urban Herbs

Anxiety is the most common mental health disorder in the US, affecting some 40 million adults.  It can take many forms such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, depression, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  PTSD largely affects our armed forces, service members, and abuse victims.  Unfortunately, many people struggle with anxiety without seeking medical attention for fear of being "earmarked" with a psychiatric illness and stigmatized.  Effective alternative avenues of support include talk therapy, meditation, and Chinese medicine.

In Chinese medicine, anxiety and depression are related to an imbalance in specific organs of the body.  Perhaps it is stemming from the Spleen, which is related to worry, or the Liver, which is related to anger.  Maybe the Heart Qi is weak and is not nourishing the spirit.  A Chinese medicine practitioner can determine the imbalance in the body, and through acupuncture and herbs, can work to restore homeostasis. Chinese medicine does this by relieving tension, calming the mind, and stabilizing the mood.

Many studies have been conducted showing the effectiveness of the NADA protocol, which is a series of acu-points to alleviate symptoms of PTSD.  One study found that it was as effective as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and another showed it was equally as effective as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), a common medication used in PTSD treatment.  When used with additional Chinese medicine modalities the patients seemed to fare even better.

If you or someone you know is looking for an alternative way to treat an anxiety condition, take some time to look into Chinese medicine.  At Urban Herbs, a practitioner will work with you to balance the body, relieve stress and anxiety, and get you feeling your best.
